NOTICE
: Do not read any further unless you have at least FIVE years of training under your belt. These sample Advanced Intensity Techniques may cause overtraining for beginner and intermediate lifters due to the extreme nature of the paramaters.

I prefer to do these with squats, however you can do them with ANY compound lift. What you will do is choose the lift you will be doing (around a 50-65% of 1 Rep Max range) and proceed to take the set until failure. Instead of dropping the weight or racking it though, you’ll hold the weight in place at the starting position of the lift until you can muster up enough energy to continue the set further. Take that set to failure as well.

You’ll continue this cycle until you can no longer do a single rep… and that’s just set 1… before you’re done you’ll have seen 4-5 of these mean machines!

This won’t just clear up any imbalances you might have, it will make any exercise exponentially more INTENSE!  I know it seems simple, but the amount of muscle activated by forcing you to stabilize the erectors and other muscles hugging your spine will turn any seemingly easy exercise into a puke inducing one.

How to use: Although you can obviously use these movements for lower body lifts (pistols, step ups and lunges to name a few), I’d like to steer you towards the man making benefits of incorporating them into your upper body regimen.  Done predominantly with dumbbells (or kettle bells if you have them), simply do the same lifts you would normally do during a typical training day, just with one dumbbell.

Sample: Because I love Strongman training, dumbbell jerks are one of my favorite movements to throw in my routine. Whether it’s doing as many as I can in one minute or going for a 1 Rep Max, the strength that this builds and intensity it requires is a perfect recipe for physique I’m going for.

(Compound to Isolation Superset): Why are these called bomb sets? Because if you do them right it feels like you got a bomb dropped on you!

Now if you are already a Lean Hybrid Muscle disciple you’re gonna see “isolation” and probably try to stone me, but stay with me a second… All we are doing is adding some hot sauce to the end of the compound lift that was already drenched with Habanero… Still think you’re too bad for these?

How to use: Choose a compound lift to take until failure. Upon completion of said set, jump straight into an isolation exercise that will further throttle the same muscle group that you already beat up with the compound lift.

Example: After doing a set of weighted chin-ups (not pull downs, those are for pansies), jump right into a set of standing bicep curls. Do NOT do your curls in the squat rack.

You watched the video so you understand that to make any workout harder you can manipulate the main variables which include:  REPS, SETS, REST INTERVALS, INTENSITY and TEMPO.
