Power Building and Resistance Cardio: The Killer Combo!

resistance-cardioIt never ceases to amaze me how many people have fallen victim to the lie of “isolated results.”  Essentially, the idea that fitness, success and life results are created in a vacuum… completely detached and isolated incidences.

For example, many women call me inquiring about fitness training and assert their desire to “lose belly fat” or “get leaner arms”.  What they fail to realize is that fat loss, muscle building and all fitness results are the expression of a SYSTEMIC change in their bodies… not just the manipulation of a single muscle or energy system.

As one of my favorite authors Dan John, would say… “The body is one piece.”

We evolve as a whole.  All systems… muscular, nervous, cardiovascular and hormonal systems work synergistically to move us in the direction that’s most consistent with our behaviors.  Even when we aim to isolate systems, we unexpectedly receive the benefits of advancement in others.

For example, you decide to quit smoking so that you can breathe better.  After several months of not smoking you notice an improvement in your cardiovascular abilities, but you ALSO recognize that your skin looks better and your hair has stopped falling out!  This is exactly how our body works… we are “one piece”.

Whatever we do, affects everything.

If we agree that the human body / mind is a single unit, then why do we still approach our exercise and training programs in a segmented fashion?  Wouldn’t it make more sense to work WITH our bodies and prepare for the advancement of ALL strength and fitness qualities at the same time?

When we follow a “holistic” or hybrid approach to our training we effortlessly move in the direction of our greatest muscle building, fat loss and athletic performance potentials without resistance from nature.  We are moving with the river, instead of against it.  This leads to faster, longer lasting results… minus the typical anxiety and frustration.

Two of my favorite integrated or hybrid approaches fat loss and muscle building are “Power-building” and “Resistance cardio”.  These hybrid training systems enhance your body’s ability to naturally build muscle and burn fat at the same time.  They are effective means for increasing strength, muscle mass, cardiovascular health, fat loss and systemic vitality.

The first hybrid approach is “Power Building”.  This is where a fitness seeker or athlete combines strength producing exercises and the variables consistent with it (heavy weights and low volume) with muscle building exercises and the parameters associated with it (moderate weights and high volume) in the same workout.

An example of a Power Building workout would include a heavy full body exercise like barbell squats for multiple sets to train the nervous system followed by a moderate intensity exercise for higher reps like dumbbell step-ups to develop muscle mass.  This is a great way to improve functional strength and build attractive muscle at the same time.

power-buildingWith regards to conventional cardio training, most individuals limit themselves to the single dimension of jogging or cycling.  This type of training is good… but what may be even better would be to combine the efforts of the cardiovascular system with the muscular system.  This would create a hybrid experience within the body that produces the results of more lean mass while burning fat.

Resistance Cardio can be performed in several manners, but amongst my favorite are the use of pulling sleds and kettlebells.  Pulling sleds offers a low impact, moderate intensity form of cardio training that has the capacity to build muscle and strength in the legs and core while increasing the heart rate offering a fat burning response.

I also really enjoy kettlebell training as it offers a functional (and fun) alternative to jogging.  Kettlebells also elicit a muscle building response which leads to a leaner, HARDER physique that with the use of jogging alone.

When we follow a “holistic” or hybrid approach to our training we effortlessly move in the direction of our greatest muscle building, fat loss and athletic performance potentials with ease.

Hybrid muscle training is highly effective, functional and fun.  If you believe as I do, that the body (and our lives) are an expression integrated  systems and subsystems AND you love the fat loss and muscle building benefits of challenging workouts… then I invite you to consider Lean Hybrid Muscle training!

I’m 235; as well! For what it’s worth — I have purchased several sizes of resistance rods (Weider crossbow” and use them for various exercises of my own design / some that I bend by pulling my hands together with the bar in front of and behind me / some that I stradle as if putting a string on a bow (as in bow and arrow / some that I anchor and pull on … et al.

If the crossbow and/or bowflex ever goes out of fashion I’m looking to buy out the resistance rod stock (various poundages – 10 to 100) and create training
configurations and methodologies using them in various ways.

…any thoughts?

I can relate to what you are saying E, when I mix intense cardio like pump class or body attack with power lifting thats when I get the most growth! Unfortunately classes aren’t always available when I want to do them so all your hints on training are fantastic, great work mate!

Hey e man great read. Thanx. I’m a teen that has the endomorphic gene i eat as much as the regular teens in my class and am naturaly bigger then them. I’m fat and not the ‘ph’ kind either. Recently got what i wanted for christmas a weight bench with hamstring excercise station and lat tower.My uncle and i fixed it all cept the lat tower were missing a part but thats ok. For my burfday the next day my mom got me a blender for my shakes. Is it possible that you could help me an amatuer bodybuilder with looosing phat and building muscle . I’ve read quite a bit of your emails as i’ve subscribed and i’m ready to fully start working out to do some Muscle traing for ” lean hybrid muscle” .
can you help. Please reply.

Elliot (and Mike)

I am totally on board with what you are saying. I have been following you and Mike since Sean N sent me your LHM link. Here is my problem(s). I have a hard time working out at home (long story) and I do not have the space or money anyhow (longer story). For me what has worked in the past is going to a gym. But, of course, my gym does not have kettlebells or sleds or tires etc (fyi: my gym is definitely not a pretty boy gym and it is only $200 a year). I would like to purchase your system because I believe in what you guys are saying. Here is what is holding me back. I want a 3 to 6 month workout plan completely laid out for me in which there is little to no thinking to do. Also I need it to be gym friendly because I am not in a position (at least for now) to work out at home. It is not because I am lazy, it is simply because I am really busy with my work (I am a design Engineer) and life (wife, kids, functions, you know). I just don’t have the time to read a whole lot and try to use theory and templates to work out with. I recently almost bought Sean N workout program but I emailed him some questions and never got a response … so I may use the money on your program. The main thing I liked about his program was he advertises a 26 week program all laid out for you with printable worksheets and it is geared towards people who go to a gym where as yours is geared towards people who like to workout at home but it can be customized for the gym. Does this make sense (sorry if it doesn’t)?

I guess my question is do you only have templates or do you have fully constructed, gym friendly, workout(s) that, if I buy your program, I can just go to the gym the next day and start?

If I lived in Florida, it would be one thing, because I would be a member of your gym. But I don’t. I am willing to bust my butt in the gym, but when it comes to program lay out, I just don’t have the time or the mental resources.

Sorry for the long blog/question. Maybe someone else has had this same question. Anyhow …

Thanks for the answer. The reason I have been on the fence for months is because I am in the middle of a program (so I have not really been ready to buy anything new and change gears), but when I get done I am going to want to move onto something new/different. I should have bought LHM when you had your last sale though (my bad – any sales coming up?).

Not to be redundant, but my main concern is with “resistance cardio” (and its implementation) because I can not really see a means of doing that at my gym (or at home). Thoughts?

Sorry if I sound like a skeptic. I am not skeptical of what you are saying just in the means/implementation/equipment/etc. Thanks again.

Check out the Bull strength conditioning. Most of the workouts in it are done in the gym.

Great article Elliott, simple and full of great info. Resistance Cardio is the real deal. As a formerly fat competitive powerlifting, using kettlebells 2x a week on top of powerlifting plus cutting beer out of my diet totally changed my body and kept it lean and healthy for years.

So when you to do a heavy barbell squat followed be moderate weight step ups. Do you finish the barbell sets before moving on or do you do the step ups inbetween each squat set?
