Mike and Elliot,

Thanks for the downloads guys.

As a personal trainer for the past 10 years, I’ve seen way too many people wasting time with exercises and machines that don’t challenge them the way they really need to make changes.

I think these reports do great justice to helping to combine strength and function.

Keep up the great work.

As a fitness coach with over 9 years and 1000’s of hours of hands-on experience and having a dedication toward mixed martial arts and powerlifting, I fully endorse and appreciate the concept of hybrid training. This model definately defies what most personal trainers and so-called fitness experts proclaim can’t happen simutaneously – build muscle and lose fat at the same time. Most trainers waist your time, money and self esteem by placing clients on a step by step process just to build muscle.

The human body is highly advanced and functions by constantly maintaining homeostasis – balance and adaptation. This is done in order for our system to survive and evolve in any adverse environment we may place it in. Therefore, it would not take a rocket scientist to assume if you place your body in a strength, cardio, body-building and power training environment all at once, it will adapt and give you the super hero figure faster than periodization.

Finally, Elliot did a great job with this explanation by differentiating between type I and IIb muscle fibers. Each muscle has a distint function and varies in amount based on the type of workload or environment we place them in. Thus, it is possible to train your body and their functions interconnectedly in order to get a lean, muscular and powerful physique. Keep up the science Elliot and Mike!

“Good stuff! I had been using a training system very similar to this and was having great results. Until I broke my arm. Now Im on the mend, but am chompin at the bit to get started again. I truly believe this program will work for anyone. Most people will not want to do this stuff. Because “its too hard”! Their loss. They can be weak the rest of their lives for all I care. Take care and I cant wait to see what you come up with next!”

Very interesting and will certainly give it a go.

It all sounds good and I have thought about similar ideas while training.
I just read the book as well and the only thing I have to disagree with is the fasting and eating only once a day thing. A couple of years ago I was weight training and running regularly but I was only eating one or two meals a day and as a result I packed on a crap load of fat and looked terrible.
I eat the standard 6 meals a day now and have no problems keeping lean and gaining muscle mass (lean except for the bulk-up stage).
Other wise I will be trying some of these exercises mentioned along with my regular weight training and cardio sessions.

There are several abandoned saw mills about the place, and I raid them from time to time to pick up massive old cogs and pulleys for my weight training. I should be able to find some good stuff for this type of training…. plus I gotta drag it all home first!

Elliot,
Great Stuff, but my queston is- Since I first found out about you, isn’t this what you’ve been about for a year or so now? At least thats what I’ve taken away from most of your lessons. At 34, I have had more fun with my training than ever! Having grown up in an agriculture based family business, even back in high school the muscle heads that that juiced would get pissed when the “dairy boys” would come in the gym and beat their bests! I always knew that there was a difference in “gym strong” and “farm strong” or real world strong. Thanks to you, and guys like “Z.E.” my eyes were re-opened to the kind of workouts that made me a beast way back when. (sort of funny, your gym is your business- my business has become my gym) My wife thinks I’ve lost my mind with my used wheel loader tires, tractor weights, and old well casings in our back yard! (my kids get a huge kick out of it!) And now some of my employees are catching on as we have “milk barrel” competitions to see who can carry 30 gal milk barrels for the calves the farthest! And my 4 yr old loves to time me driving “t posts” (10 posts-2ft deep as fast as you can- it’s a killer!! but great grip, shoulder, arm, specific but really your whole body is spent when your done!)
I really just want to throw a big “THANKS” for re-opening my eyes, a big “CONGRATS” on your pro card, and keep up the great work!!

PS. My Co-op has been working on designer milks for a few years now, we have one called Athletes Honey Milk- not as much protein content as I wanted to see but it is more of a post game recovery drink- around 22g protein. Google it and check it out, if you want a sample case to try let me know and I’ll get it to you-
Thanks Again- I really didn’t want that to be a shameless plug but it kinda sounds that way huh?

Hi Elliot,

I’ve just finished reading Brooks Kubik’s Dinosaur training & it has some similar training ideas using sandbags, boulders, kegs, car pushing etc. I’ve started doing some training with my 15 year old, who’s a keen rugby player here in Australia & he’s loving the outdoor & variety aspect of the training compared to just lifting in a gym environment. Come to think of it, so am I.

Hey Elliot, you’re doing a great job putting out good content for us, esp considering how busy you must be with a family and a business to run. Looking forward to hearing more about this proposed training system as you develop it. Some aspects sound a bit similar to a functional hypertrophy program I’m using, where each workout started with a compound strength movement (low reps), then supersetted a pair of exercises for hypertrophy (moderate-high reps), and finished with “GPP” (usually implement work). Keep experimenting… if your strength is any indicator, you’re on the right track!

This stuff is awesome. Simple as that. Before I read the downloaded article I have been experimenting and implementing this type of training into my routine for football getting great results. But the article really put it into perspective for my 17 year old head and has really has helped me come up with some new idea and structure. I really look forward to seeing future results and blogs.

Just a quick note there are a couple of guys who train out of a place called Gym Jones in Salt Lake City. The guy who owns the gym name is Mark Twight. Some of you might or might not have heard of him. They are all about this sort of training style and actually trained the actors and stunt men for the recent movie 300. Unfortunately the only real public notice they got was the so called “300″ workout (featured in all the big glossy muscle mags) which only just a fitness test, which now all these average gym junkies do day in and day out and call themselves hardcore or whatever.

Anyways this stuff is great. Look forward to future information.

Hey, great video can’t wait for the flow of information as you get all your results together.
I’m over in the UK training out of my garage and love the variety of traing with KBs BBs DBS SBs CBs and anything else I can get my hands on. My aim is to become a better basketball player but also keep getting stronger. So a program that allows muscle and strength building without the usual extras of bodyfat and general slowing down is a must for me. Like I said can’t wait for the next installment.

I do have one question from the video, I can do most things but have no facilities for sledge training. Can you suggest anthing that provides the same benefits or an excercise to focus on more to make up for what I am missing?

Great content on that video. You clearly enjoy what you are doing. Would of been good to do more on genetics and how critical they are to the end result.

I have been experimenting with something similar for about 2 months now. You can induce deep hypertrophy by using high reps 20 to 30 mid range 10 to 12 and then 3 or 4 always to failure. Plus other royal marine training type exercises in between sets. It is very hard so you do really need to take the rest days and nutrition very serious. August 15, 2009

Hey, Elliot and Mike. Great idea. I’ve been looking exactly for this type of training for years. And I’ve messed around with some of this kinda thing before.

As for training how about this: Why not place the sets and reps in an EDT type format? Just keep doing more and more sets with the same amount of reps, and then when the reps start dropping, continue regardless until a certain amount of sets have been reached.

Of course for the more cardio heavy movements such as sandbag carries and sled drags, why not just keep a stopwatch on hand and keep sets less than thirty seconds. This should overload the muscle and continue the growth, while conditioning, and keeping testosterone and growth hormone levels high. Then just keep the resistance the same and add sets until you reach a certain number and from that point continually add weight. That should develop some super strength and conditioning. And of course there’s always tire sled rowing… like those Vikings for extended periods of time or distances.

As for the more weight-like movements, I would focus mostly on Sandbag loading, presses, throwing, carrying, and Farmers walks as these are less likely to injure the person when they become really fatigued, than say… Atlas Stones or Barbells, or maybe even Kettlebells that are pressed overhead. Classic Dumbbell swings could also be utilized instead of Kettlebells, but smaller plates should be used.

You could dedicate a different session per week to using different systems: Sandbag one day, Tiresled another, Farmer’s Walks the next, Rotational/Swing Workouts the next, etc.

I think that as long as you only focused on one exercise per day you could theoretically push your sessions continually longer and longer and always be developing more stamina and strength… also, you wouldn’t run out of ways to work a lift. And if you can Clean and Press a 280 pound sandbag almost continually for fifty minutes… you’re probably pretty strong and conditioned…

Of course this could totally not work, but it’s a theory and food for thought.

Again, great idea. Keep us all posted, cause we want a system! I think everyone does.

Christopher

Yrret,

Thanks for the comment brother!

You are 100% correct, there are a ton of BS-ers on the internet claiming to be experts and teaching people about stuff they really don’t know anything about.

The truth is that we are NOT sure what we are doing!

Mike and I have become intrigued with the idea of “Hybrid” strength training and fat loss and are just messing around with with.

We are not sure if this is even going to work, but we figured that since we both like using the internet to connect with people and enjoy building communities around unique ideas that we’d simply publish it for your viewing pleasure AND critique!

ALSO, since Mike and I both are running our individual businesses we have very little time to devise “Marketing Ploys”.

In fact, we are selling NOTHING! Just creating conversation.

As far as credentials… I have a ton of letters that I can put next to my name but often choose not to. Most guys with “credentials” rest on them… I on the other hand despise them.

I aim to approach each day with a “clean slate”… as if I am NO ONE and I know NOTHING. Brandishing letters is a way to tell people that you know something… this would be a lie in my case.

Thanks to ALL OF YOU for your feedback and comments!!!

I think it is very different for a man of 56 to work out and train than a younger man in even his 30s. Things change but I have not given up. I was very inspired by that 70 years old guy, thanks for including him. I work out at least 4 times a week and it keps me young.

It´s true that gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time is very difficult to achieve. In my case I have another obstacle, that is RA, the reason why I am cautious with heavy weights, so not to impare my joints.
Anyway, I am looking forward to reading the report, and I also would like to hear experts opinions or comments about weight lifting when in condition with RA.

Loucas,

I’ve been train a 66 year old woman at Strength Camp who has RA for over 3 years now. She is doing great and LOVES these types of workouts… but she is unusual, she has the strongest determination that I have ever seen!

Elliott is a great presenter!

I wonder what is the “catch” to Type IIc fibers. If it is possible for fibers to be both fast-twitch (Type II) and oxidative (Type I) it seems that evolution would have made all fibers that way, unless there were some drawback.

[Reply]

leanhybr Reply:

Thanks Ken! A strange thing about our bodies… the take the form of what we do with it. So if there is a capacity that goes unused for an extended period of time.. like 10 generations! Then it is diminished or eliminated completely.

The good news is that it take 10,000 years to change an genome by .001 percent… so for all intents and purposes we STILL do posses this capacity but rarely ever us it.

the method of training is prob the best out there. iv not long bin a personal trainer but iv been doin mixed martial arts for a wile now and used this system myself and the results are amazing. More gyms and personal trainers should use this sort of training. The main drawback iv found though is getting hold of some of the equipment. if any one knows where i can get hold of some decent equipment please let me know.

Totally agree with concept and have experimented on my own… I’ve been mixing the MAX-OT method with Rick Gray’s muscle overload training while intertwining rest/pause sets and extended pulse reps. I’ve totally recomped my physique, building muscle while burning fat, though I truly believe that the secret lies in the nutrition method one utilizes. I personally have used Intra workout feeding/supplementation and ANTF method, timing my simple carb and protein intake during and within the 3 hrs. following my training and then restricting my carbs to complex/fibrous with continued protein intake every 2-3 hrs. throughout the rest of the day. By the way I’m an early A.M. lifter.

Well done, you guys are awesome!

I’ve been a big fun of functional strength/power training for the last few years now and it has been much fun coming to the gym and looking quite hubmle with my 180lb /6ft frame but then hitting the weights and lifting a fair bit more than alot of 210lb+ guys could lift. But now I’m looking to pack some more serious lean muscle for size while keeping the functional strength that I’m so used to now.

What you guys doing would help many other guys like me to achieve the goal of being strong and lean while having the muscle enjurance at the same time. I think there is a gap for a new type of training and you’re on it – so keep up the great work !!

Certainly. See the girl in the header of the site? Male and female muscle fibers are the same. What works for men will work for women. Well Elliot, it will take too much space to tell you my experience but i give it a try
I am a 16 years old former obese guy then skinny, thats right ive been obese and skinny too!
When i was a child i was averege, no skinny and no fat, somwhere betwen,
as i growed up to 9-10 years i started getting fat, more and more every month, im the end i was a nasty bull,
i was very very fat, i had big manboobs, i got all the posture problems posibile,my back was like a camels back in an S form, i got intestinal problems,
, i didnt know anything about looking good, about being confident, i was eating the worst food posibile
all the time “chips, cola, ice cream, french fries, fried food” all pepole and collagues always make fun of me and my size calling me ” buffalo”, “camel”, sumo wrestler,it was always a rain of tears when i sawn the ripped guys with hot women, and no one looked at me,
, i tryed so many programs, so many diets, so many pills, blindly following the damaging advice of the weight loss
industry, in the end i remain the same. I began to study and study, days and nights i ve been deeply thinking, i keept my ears opend to every single word talked in the gym, i purchased the programs of many experts and in the end i leaned down so fast that i got somekind of skinny guy with ugly excessive skin all over my abs and chest! 5 January 2009, after puting a bet with a huge steroider i began building muscle, with little sucess though, in the first 4 months i gained back FAT instead, i leaned back down and i still have excessive skin that looks like fat, i dont know what to do should i start building muscle again?? should i switch powelifting? Maybe your “Hybrid Muscle” program will allow me to do both!

This is very fascinating. Have any of these other researchers that you’ve talked about actually documented increase in mitochondrial density, or are they just all theorizing? This concept is not completely new to me, due the fact that in rock climbing your strive to develop what we refer to as Power-endurance. In fact, I would say that if anything fit into what you’re talking about, it would be high level climbing. You must perform powerful, strengthy movements over 3-8 minutes of climbing.

While it fits into the time line of cardio, and it definitely does tax your cardiovascular system (speaking from experience) you must also use powerful movements involving major upper body and even sometimes lower body muscle groups.
Watch this video of world famous climber Chris Sharma, and tell me he doesn’t have Hybrid type III muscle fibers!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9OobE5MkhA

[Reply]

leanhybr Reply:

YES! Bob this is exactly what Hybrid Muscle is all about. Displaying the qualities of several different fiber types.

Like you say “Power-Endurance”, this is a perfect example.

And just look at Sharma, he is lean, strong, jacked and POWERFUL… with great endurance!!

Thanks for the comment.

[Reply]

Bob Reply:

It’s awesome that I found you guys, because this concept has been
on my mind for a while. What’s interesting is I also found a triathlete
study about what hey refer to as speed-endurance, which is simply
the ability to maintain maximum speed “wattage” for extended
periods of time.

The concept they discussed was not related to mitochondrial density,
but actually to the rate at which the type I endurance fibers can
metabolize lactic acid. type II muscle fibers produced quite a bit of
lactic acid during work. The build up of lactic acid is known to cause failure during strength activities. The theory is that by working in a zone called the “lactate threshold”, your can actually increase your type I fibers ability to metabolize lactate and thereby increase the duration a muscle can maintain a maximum strength efforts.

So this might be another factor in developing “long strength” I’ll do some more research on how to hit this “lactate threshold” zone get back to you guys. Maybe you can experiment with the idea. Let’s keep in touch, e-mail me any time. Right now I’m studying to become a personal trainer, and I’m highly fascinated with climbing performance, and I’m actually trying to create a training program for climbers. I think we can help eachother out here.

very informative video. There´s a site (only in German) called Fast-twitch, proving that x-Fit training (with a little twist) can make triathletes better (= faster, more stamina,..) without the long, boring hours on the bike, in the pool or running in the streets.

At the end of the day, it comes all together – no matter how you name it.

Agaim, very informative, thanks Elliott for a great video!

I’ve always believed being gym strong isn’t the goal but doing these full body functionial exercises has to burn more calories for fat burning. Isolation is great for the pump, but if you want strength, function and fat burning you have to add this “hybrid training” you’re teaching about. Seems that it’s been around for hundreds of years yet nobody has acknowledged the type III muscle yet. Interesting and thanks for the information guys. If there was access, then 6-8 rolls at a time) and also lifting rocks, digging myriad holes, and shoveling up to 6 tonne of soil, and dragging a big wide rake across it to level it. Although this hybrid system is awesome there are some cons:
1. It is pretty demanding, i have come to realise that training like this for more than 40 min is insane, leaves me done for the rest of the day, and i cant do it more than 5 days per week if i want to do something else than train ajja.
2. It makes me pretty hungry, and still some diet has to be done.

isnt this what vince Gironda has been doing for all those years. He had you do 8×8. Complete the workout as FAST as possible resting only 30 seconds between sets (so your heartrate is way up) and lifting heavy weights at teh same time. And look at how succesfull he was. I gues its along the same lines. The faster the workout compared to the last workout) then you progressed. Just like adding weight reps, etc.. But it was more of a power endurance workout. Like you decribe.

How can I imcorperate your ideas in my workout tomorro? Like add what to my workouts? Cardio unbetween sets?, shorter rests, strong man training at the end of workout. What do you say?

Hi there Elliott, just commenting on your concept of burning fat and building muscle. the facts that you state in your video is true. However what i’m about to say, you might have heard of it. It’s training that burns fat and builds muscle at the same time. I currently workout just using my bodyweight. I have never set foot in a gym, but the results that i have achieved has so far been great. This bodyweight training has been proven effective. It is what the craziest athletes on the planet use. This is based on the science on the wild animals, such as Tigers, Gorillas, etc. Ask yourself a question, how to the tigers get there super strength, speed and endurance? There are no gym equipment in the wild, absolutely nothing. How do Gorillas get their bodies, 100% muscle mass. The answer, their own bodyweight. So scientists has used the principles of the animals and used it for humans. This improves your speed, your functional strength, your endurance all in one workout, not different workouts each day. And not to mention the physique that is ready to jump out and spring into action. This training truly burns fat, builds muscle and i can clearly say that this is 100% true, because i am experiencing it. I just put together my 16 week programme and i am on my 7th week and the results are unbelievable. And one of the best thing is, that there are so many variations, you can never get bored.

Kind Regards, and thanks for the video!

p.s i am only 17 years old, so I am not any qualified fitness instructor and i don’t have a website, but with a lot of research and hard work, my knowledge increased.

First off I started to train for the first time 2 1/2 months ago at the age of 37. I was a freaking sedentary man at work and home and really week, not fat but week. A 6 foot tall stick. I got pissed of and said enough is enough! Took some ideas from some websites, Bought 2x 60 pound sand bags 2 army bags made lots of 5lbs zip lock bags. Yea 5 lbs what can I say … I’m a weakling. Add to that that I have a Scoliosis that I am aggressively strengthening, for over a year now,. and I am dam close to be able to stick it to the doctors and say HA! Told you I’d fix my back!!!! Any way, those army bags act like Kettle bells and maybe even better because the weight is truly unbalanced. And if you twist the bag then bend it in half you have your self a very big diameter grip. My hands are constantly killing me but it feels good! I do pull ups on an free rolling thick steal pipe. Since it roles ether you force like hell to stop the bar from rolling or you end up holding your self up with only your finger which is a killer.

So for the past 2 1/2 months I’ve been train with standard BB exercises but intensively, non stop, for 45 minutes from monday to friday.
I’v been steadily losing 1 lbs of fat and gaining 1.2 lbs of muscle per week.
Any one know if this is good?

Any way I think I will incorporate some of these exercises in my next 3 week cycle in a hidden place.
I would feel a bit out of place in a big city park in Montreal with a big tire, sleds, tree trunk, A bear keg boulders and a sledge hammer. Heck might as well start up a GRRRrrrrGym! Maybe next summer!

The Super Hero muscle video kicks ass!

The type of hybrid-muscle training you describe sounds very similar to the stuff they put me through during Basic Training in the Australian Army.

They called it “Combat PT” and we had to exercise wearing our full combat gear (webbing, rifle, waterbottles, sometimes a huge backpack too (think it was 30kilos). We had to exercise for extended periods of time (going through obstacle courses, carrying ammo crates for long distances, etc) while wearing our gear.

I personally, during the 45 days of basic training I gained 7 kilos of muscle and no fat. And I noticed the guys in my platoon who started out overweight lost a lot of weight after the training.

I believe that gaining muscle and losing fat both at the same time can be done.

Hey guys, very cool ideas. This reminds me of training plan done by a guy called Jon Edmondson. He also talked significantly about the Mitocondria in his book called “the man who stopped the clock”. He basically tested his theories on himself – at one time he held the world record for teh most push ups in 1 hour – something like 2.500 ! His key training program was called the Russian Astronaut training program whcih was basically 10 set of 10 basic exercises (push ups, chins, tuck jumps etc) The idea was to go thru it as fast as possible so no rest between each exercise at all… It sounded easy but oh boy it kicked butt. Awesome work out. Worth a read for the traiing plan alone if you can find a copy.

It was very interesting to learn new and original ideas on the vast field of exercise. Even more convincing the recall from history of possible ancient methods. To combine strength building with endurance and functional training was my natural approach without having any ideology behind, just the fun side. Evidently the results are not so good. Now I see, there is an effort to put behind all of that a brand new methodology. Not everybody is able to be a strong man competitor but millions of sports or everyday activities can benefit from a methodical approach of improving health and wellbeing. The only real question is how fast? I do not believe in overnight results. Even less of the capacity of joints and ligaments to absorb the excessive load without serious injuries. I think that problem which throws me back repeatedly is quite general. How does it look like gradual (slow) progress in your methods?

You guys are surely on to something. I have always felt the same as you (about bulking and cutting, so dumb) and altered my workouts to burn fat and built muscle at the same time. It works and I have been training this way for a few years now piece mealing all the info I can attain from different sources to create a new way to train. You have got it correct and I like the name you have giving it. I wish I had access to train in a gym such as you have. I typically work out in a regular gym but use very different methods many along the same lines as you are teaching. The equipment is really not right in regular gyms to train in this method properly. Keep up the good work.

Now if you want to survive on a battlefield with 80 lbs of body armor, helmet, weapon and individual gear, you have to work your body for that job, in other words, train like a warrior! FORTUNATELY I WAS ATHLETIC AND A FAST RUNNER. THEY COULD NOT CATCH ME BUT IT WAS EMBARRASSING.

AFTER TWO YEARS OF DEDICATED TRAINING WITH WEIGHTS THAT I PURCHASED I CONFRONTED MY TORMENTORS. I DID NOT RUN AND THEY SHEEPISHLY WALKED AWAY. TYPICAL OF BULLIES. THEY ONLY BULLY THOSE WHO ARE WEAKEN THAN THEY ARE.

IN MY DAY WE HAD NO GYMS IN SOUTH AFRICA SO I BOUGHT A BARBELL, TWO DUMBBELLS, A HEAD STRAP AND IRON BOOTS

TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF MY STRENGTH, AT AGE 83 I CAN DO A DEADLIFT WITH REASONABLE EASE OF 150 KILOGRAMS (330P POUNDS) MY MAXIMUM IS 160 KILOGRAMS BUT THEN I HAVE TO PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS.

I am a professional pitcher who has been using training like this for about 4 years now. This video helped connect some dots for me on why some things have worked how they have.

Some examples can be seen here. Unfortunately the audio has been disabled by youtube and my pitching coach Fletch who made this video passed away last year so he cannot edit it. I am going to redo some of this stuff.

It is my ambition to bring the superhero physique and personia to the mound. Thanks for the information packed video.

I play on the University of Western Ontario (Canada) Varsity Football Team. As you can probably guess we spend hours on the field, and hours in the weight room every week during season. Off-Season is when it gets interesting. Our Strength and Conditioning Coach is a big fan of Hybrid Muscle, Long Muscle, Strongman Workouts, and the like. So, in addition to our traditional lifts, cardio and, agility he throws in these great outdoor high intensity cardio, strongman workouts that get you pumped and feeling great.

This stuff works! Keep up the experimenting and the great posts!

Ive heard of these hybrid work out types with names like functional strength training, combined interval training, tabata protocol workouts, ive been doing them since this summer and they work great like nobodies buissness thats how I found this site by looking for these type workouts. One thing I have noticed from these workouts are hidden benefits, such as improved balance and agility which I didnt notice to the same extent when doing just bodybuilding workouts, I have better cardio capacity than I did when doing just steady state cardio, and I kid u not but my sex drive shot through the roof also no lie. These workouts seem to be the next big phase shift in fitness.

Hello,
Thank you for all the information. I am 60 years old and have been involved in working out since 1972. I was involved in starting a new construction company for several years and with the amount of hours required my training was put on hold. I also went through a partial knee replacement and gained a lot of weight (45 LB.) due to the in-activity of the whole process. I am now retired and trying to remove the weight and re-gain my strength. I have been very disappointed with my progress. My training has amounted to one hour per day of aerobics and weight training three days per week. I have been performing the 10 week surge program and Positions of Flexatation program found in Iron Man. I listened to your program on superhuman radio and wish to see where your program will take me. My only concern is the wear on my artificial knee. I have been doing squats and dead lifts knowing I need them to increase my overall strength but I’m only using moderate weights on these lifts. I will keep you informed on my progress.
Thank you,
Jon Timothy Boyd

You have succeeded in presenting a clear, realistic approach to functional strength training. As a medical professional in a post-operative rehabilitation facility, it is clear that if people would exercise for function, the number of surgical procedures related to obesity and joint degeneration would be drastically reduced.
Only one criticism Elliot. You referred to everyone you obtained valuable information in your video as old people. Maybe a true statement, however you might consider some positive adjectives such as seasoned, experienced,or even wise.

I AM FREQUENTLY ASKED WHY I DID NOT TRAIN FOR BODYBUILDING CONTESTS.
REASON ONE: I JOINED THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE IN 1946 AND BECAME A DETECTIVE IN 1947. I WAS TOO BUSY FIGHTING CRIME AND INVESTIGATING ABOUT 100 CRIMES ON A MONTHLY BASIS. IN OUR DAYS WORKING OVERTIME WITHOUT ADDITIONAL PAY WAS PAR FOR THE COURSE.
REASON TWO: CONCENTRATING ON BODYBUILDING ALONE ONE CAN ACHIEVE LARGE MUSCLES AND A BEAUTIFUL PHYSIQUE BUT MOST BODYBUILDERS WOULD FAIL THE BODY MASS INDEX EXAMINATION THEY ARE DEFINED AS OVERWEIGHT OR EVEN OBESE BY THE MEDICAL PROFESSION.
I OPTED FOR A COMBINATION OF POWER AND SPEED BECAUSE AS A POLICEMAN I HAD TO HAVE SPEED TO PURSUE A CRIMINAL AND POWER TO OVERCOME ANY RESISTANCE TO AN ARREST.
TODAY I STILL PLACE THE EMPHASIS ON POWER. AT 83 AND A BODYWEIGHT OF 100 KILOGRAMS I CAN STILL DEADLIFT A MAXIMUM OF 160 KILOGRAMS OR 150 KILOGRAMS WITH RELATIVE EASE. IN MY DEADLIFT VIDEO ON
http://www.facebook.com, http://www.youtube.com, http://www.blogger.com and http://www.myspace.com you will see how I deadlifted 140 kilograms with ease.

Eliott, I find your work really interesting and I think it must work, I definiteley would like to give it a try.
And I also have a question. As a professional trainer you might have heard about Mixed Martial Arts trainig. Would it be helpful to build type III muscle fibers?? I mean, the sport is very intense and these athletes must be very strong, quick, powerful and have a lot of stamina.
Well, I’ll keep visiting the blog. Thanks.

[Reply]

leanhybr Reply:

Hey Jorge, it would depend on how you train. Rather than asking if MMA training would develop type III muscle fiber the question I would ask is how can I train to develop type III muscle fiber to help me become a better MMA fighter. Check out the blog for sure, you shoud find lots of helpful content. And when you’re ready to give the Lean Hybrid Muscle Building Program we’ll be here at http://www.leanhybridmuscle.com/build-muscle.html

they do work great though… becoming a landscaper got me doing these same type of workouts, WHILE GETTING PAID!.. ;)

haven’t watched the DVD yet… but I read the ‘warrior physique’… You could have added some tips on how often/long and when to do each exercise.. and how much weight to start with

I am a Marine that back in 2000 enlisted with 185 lbs of mass muscle but after going to college for 5 years, getting married, beign deployed for 28 months, having kids and working hard have lost a lot of weight (down to 144 lbs) but keeping lean muscle. At this time I want to turn my life around and go back to 185 lbs. I will get your hybrid muscle training program and keep you updated. Thanks for your hard work and for sharing it!!!!
